Gilmore was sentenced after only a two day trial in a Provo Utah courtroom. The verdict was death. He had a choice of hanging or the firing squad. He chose to be shot
Gilmore denied all of his legal appeals. He insisted to be executed. This upset many including his attorneys and the legal system.

Gilmore’s date of execution was set again, this time it was final.
A chair was brought from a prison office and rigged for the execution which took place in an old cannery building on the prison grounds.
Gary’s body was taken to the University of Utah hospital where organs were donated. His remains were cremated and his ashes were scattered from an airplane over Spanish Fork, Springville, and Provo, Utah.

The life and death of Gary Mark Gilmore impacted many people. Especially those who suffered the loss of love ones.

Most major publications featured articles of the Gilmore story. The Gilmore incident is still referenced as a landmark case in the return of Capital Punishment to America.
